Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
