Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
