Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
