Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
